WALL CAROUSEL

Every artist has specific needs. At the top of this list is the ability to explore their creative process. When Berlin artist and musician, Bátor Tóth came up with an idea to explore his creative process he looked online for a product that would get the job done. When his search came up empty handed, he decided it was time to turn to prototype product design with iterator.de…

“I HAD THIS IDEA OF BEING ABLE TO SPIN MY CANVASES WHILE WORKING ON THEM. I LOOKED AROUND ONLINE FOR ART SUPPLIES AND HARDWARE STORES FOR SOLUTIONS, BUT THERE WAS NOTHING READY-TO-GO; ONLY PARTS OF WHAT I NEEDED. i TALKED TO cam AT ITERATOR.DE AND HE LITERALLY HAD A DESIGN SOLUTION WITHIN MINUTES.”

— Bátor Tóth (Artist & Musician)

STEP ONE.
DEfine needs.

“Bátor and I have been keeping in regular contact over the past few years, and I always find it cool to learn what he’s been getting up to with his music and artwork.

He gave me a call and wanted to talk about an idea he’d been pursuing over the past few days and thought iterator.de could help.

We met and talked about what he wanted to do - spinning his artwork while working on it - which I thought was really cool, and I immediately imagined a simple two-piece hub system he could attach to the wall and to the back of his canvases and would clip together in some way. These kinds of designs are really easy for me to whip-up with my background in mechanical trades and technical product design.

We started a Custom 3D Project and I told him I’d get back to him with a preliminary design in the next day or two.”

STEP TWO.
DESIGN IT.
Print it.

“After creating a few rough sketches to block out my design intent, I jumped straight into CAD to make the first mount. The right way to do this is to recycle the components as much as possible, so I made a male and female version of the mounts, one with a strong 25x20mm magnet inside a BS 290 SKF 6205-RZ low-friction ball-bearing, and the other with a socket large enough to fit the ball-bearing which also included an inset disk magnet in its centre.

Once assembled, the magnets should provide sufficient force to keep everything together and accommodate smooth rotation of the assembly. I got in touch with Bátor and showed him what I had come up with. He was happy so I moved to the next step.

This simple product design just needed to be put into the printer and the hardware ordered online. Once it is assembled we’ll be able to test it to see if the design is a success.”

STEP THREE.
INSTALL IT.
TEST it.

“Assembly of the wall carousel was really easy and immediately exceeded my expectations, but it’s Bátor’s expectations I needed to exceed.

We met at his studio and had a quick chat about the process as we installed the wall carousel assembly to his workspace and the crossbars of a fresh canvas.

The assembly held together really well with the added weight of the canvas. Bátor was so excited he grabbed a brush and got stuck in immediately. It was great to watch him explore and really funny too because neither of us had thought about the side-effects of watching things spin - dizziness! Regardless of this fact, he was able to push some boundaries and try something unique. I think this is just the beginning of something new for Bátor. I look forward to seeing where it takes him.

Thank you for reaching out to me to ask for help dude! This was a fun product to make and I can’t wait to see what you do with it. Keep doing your thing my man!”
